Why do all yugoslavian people surnames end with ovic?

0

yes ovic (and mac, also) means ”son of”. Most European cultures are patrilineal. As far as my understanding, a person was known by his father’s name, John son of Adam for example. Some people were known by their profession or some notable characteristic or by his birthplace. John the Potter, John the Strong, John of the cliffs. A person of another tribe might be called by his tribe. But as you can see, we now simply pass on our surnames, to our children, usually patrilineally. Therefore John Davidson’s father’s name may not be David at all. Why we changed our surnaming system, I don’t know.
