What is AYP, and how will it impact where my child attends school next year?
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is a term to describe a school or school system that has met its annual goals. It is determined by assessment scores at or above standards set by the State Department of Alabama. Such measurements are required through the federal law, No Child Left Behind Act. All schools are required to meet AYP. A school that does not meet the AYP goals two consecutive years will be identified for School Improvement. Schools in school improvement will offer supplemental services for students through after school programs and summer school. Students are also eligible for Supplemental Education Services (SES) through contracted educational agencies. In addition, parents may choose to request a transfer from a school in improvement to one in the district that is not in improvement. In order to be eligible for a school choice transfer based on school improvement status, the child must be enrolled in the home school. School and district reports are made available to parents
