Why cant vets work and afford to pay for school themselves?

In many cases, the bills for school could easily amount to nearly one third of a familys income. Even if the veteran continues to work full time and attend school part time. They still have to pay for rent, insurance, car, food, etc.. They could probably scrape by, but then they will have no breathing room if an emergency happens to their family. If there is an accident, or a car breaks down, they wont have the money to bail themselves out. Additionally, this places a heavy burden on their families. Most veterans dont live extravagantly, but the maintenance of a normal lifestyle will be critical to their home life. They will already be gone most of the day for work and school. Maintaining some quality of life will help ease the burden on their families. The only other way to do this is to take out loans which will put them into a great amount of debt, increase the stress on families, and delay their entrance to public service.
