What does whale poo look like?
All mammal ‘defecate.’ The nature of the waste depends on the species of whale doing the duty. Blue whales, for example, produce reddish stuff in clumps that are about 9″ in diameter. It is red because of the reddish exoskeleton of its primary prey: krill. The stuff breaks up into small bits and dissipates fairly rapidly. Whales (and dolphins) that eat primarily fish produce a more brownish poo that also dissipates rapidly after excretion. It is similar for squid eaters such as sperm whales and pilot whales.
