Is an iguana a lizard?
Yes, iguanas are lizards and are part of the iguanid family. They can reach up to 6 feet in length and are herbivores. They do not make great pets as most people believe and 9 out of 10 never make it to their first birthday in captivity before they have been seriously injured, maimed, or die as a result of inadequate care. They require expensive lighting, large enclosures, and they need to be socialized before they actually become a “pet”. Males, during breeding season, will turn on their owner whom they have been great with for years. I ran an iguana rescue for 5 years and don’t suggest anyone keep them as a pet. Too many of these animals are imported into the country each year and most of them are severely neglected. The get purchased for less than $20.00 and the new owner is not informed of their adult size, strength, and uneven temperaments. Sorry for the long reply. I feel educating about iguanas is better than a simple yes or no response.
