Perhaps the biggest problem when you start skiing is being afraid of going “too fast” (naturally). When you head down even a gentle slope, your instincts tell you that to slow down you lean back and put your weight more on your heals – which is exactly the wrong thing to do. To keep control and make turns (it’s making turns that are best for slowing you down) – you need to keep your weight towards your toes. That’s the best advice I can give – I started with snowboarding and when I cracked where to put my weight it got a lot easier – so when I switched to skis it was a doddle. (In fact I used to say out loud “Weight forwards. Weight forwards” to make sure I did it) Definitely go with some private tuition, or join a small group – minimum of a 2 hour lesson to begin. If you don’t find it helpful then I’d recommend getting a lesson from a different instructor afterwards – some are better than others.
