For white A lot depends on your style. If you are an attacking player, I suggest the Stonewall Attack. If you like to play solid, try the Queen’s Gambit. For Black 1. e4 An attacking opening which guarantees approximate equality if played correctly is the Pirc Defense. The most solid, of course, is the Sicilian, but of course, theory of the Sicilian is now so extensive that it would be enough to fill several books. If you are up to doing research, then start doing some on the Sicilian and add it to your repertoire. Another good defensive option is the Alekhine’s Defense. 1.d4 If your opponent plays 1.d4, it usually means he is looking for a game where careful maneouvering and strategic play are important. If you are fine with this, play 1…d5 or 1….Nf6.
