What is the difference between filtering water and softening water?

Water filtration by definition simply means to strain out the impurities from a water source. By passing water through a media bed, particles (iron, sulfide or other organic matter) are trapped and filtered water passes through the bed. Softening water involves “ion exchange” to remove dissolved minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron which cannot be trapped in a media bed.
