With a VGA cable, the Xbox 360 will upscale to whatever the Standard DVD will allow. 720p/1080i. Or I believe it upscales to the resolution you have your settings on. You must use either a HDMI cable or VGA cable connection to obtain upconversion of Standard DVDs. If you use component cables, it will play HD DVDs in 1080i and Standard DVDs in 480p. With an Xbox 360 Component HD AV Cable connected to a high-definition or HD-ready television or monitor, you can view your DVD movies in 480p and your HD DVD movies in 480p, 720p, or 1080i. With an Xbox 360 VGA HD AV Cable, you can view both DVD and HD DVD movies in any supported resolution up to 1080p. (To achieve these resolutions, your TV must be capable of displaying them, and you must set the appropriate resolution in your Xbox 360 console settings). You do not need the HD DVD add-on to upscale DVD’s through the 360.
