Masters degree in counseling or social work?
The beauty of the Internet is the possibility to get information on almost anything quickly. With this in mind, I will try to respond to this question with as much clarity as possible. In my opinion, the Social Work Curriculum provides the candidate with a solid foundation for understanding human behavior in the context of the social environment. Following this two year training at the Masters Level, Social Workers must work under the supervision (tutelage) of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Administrator. This training is not just academic since it focuses on the "person in situation" meaning in his real world environment.
The Department of Health and Human Services provides the Social Work Profession with millions of dollars yearly in research grants for child abuse, sex abuse, domestic violence, substance, adoptions, poverty, mental illness and many other human conditions. The results of this research is used for everyone. None of the Counselor groups are recognized by the Federal Government.
Social Workers teach in Medical Schools, Psychology Programs, Counseling Programs, Employee Assistance Programs, Occupational Social Work and Private Psychotherapy.
There is just no way that any counseling profession can compare with the profession of Social Work. However, if you complete a Masters Degree in Psychology, you can become a LCP, MFT, MHC or a Substance Abuse Counselor. All of these will allow you to open your own private practice if this is your only goal.
